DiVA Vaginal Laser Therapy Q & A

What is the diVa laser?

DiVa laser therapy is a vaginal rejuvenation technique.

As women age, many experience changes to their vaginal and vulvar tissue. This uncomfortable condition occurs when your estrogen declines and your tissues grow thin, dry, and inflamed. When you undergo these changes, it’s common to experience a variety of uncomfortable symptoms, like urinary incontinence, painful intercourse, vaginal dryness, tightness and laxity.

At Pacific Northwest Urology Specialists, the experienced team of urologists performs diVa laser therapy on-site to stimulate the walls of your vagina, restore functional tissue, promote hydration, and improve your vaginal health.

How does diVa laser therapy work?

The diVa laser combines ablative and nonablative laser energy to restore your vaginal health. This advanced technology creates micro-tears deep in your vaginal walls designed to stimulate new collagen production in your tissue. The strategic design of the diVa laser ensures that the treatment is accurate and that the length of each therapy session is minimal, consistent, and as comfortable as possible.Your physician will customize your treatment for your specific needs.

Unlike surgical treatments, diVa laser therapy has few side effects and can offer results almost immediately. Because it triggers the production of collagen and strengthens your vaginal tissues, it can improve several uncomfortable symptoms, including:

  • Itching, burning, and dryness
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Painful intercourse
  • Vaginal laxity

It’s also safe for women who have gone through childbirth or menopause, had a hysterectomy or chemotherapy, and have breastfed.

What can I expect during diVa laser therapy?

DiVa laser therapy takes only 3-5 minutes.

Prior to the therapy, a numbing cream will be applied to the treatment area. During your appointment, your urologist inserts the diVa laser with a single-use strengthened quartz dilator (SQD) into your vagina. Throughout your treatment, the quartz tip on the SQD rotates through the treatment area while delivering pulses of energy to your tissue.

The diVa laser is ergonomically shaped to provide a relatively comfortable experience. But, you might experience a slight pressure against your vaginal wall or sensitivity at the opening of your vagina during your session.

The vaginal laser therapy works complimentary with vaginal Estrogen and lubricants to restore a healthier blood flow and collagen to relieve dryness and pain with intercourse post-menopause.

After your treatment, you can resume regular activity. Some women may have mild discomfort, spotting, or discharge, but this fades within a few days. Your urologist typically recommends avoiding sexual intercourse for 48 hours.

For maximum results, your urologist might recommend 3 diVa laser treatments. These sessions typically occur 4-6 weeks apart with one annual treatment to maintain your vaginal health.

Insurance does not cover this therapy.
