Interstim is a treatment option for overactive bladder, urgency incontinence, non-obstructive urinary retention, and fecal incontinence. It is a non-medication treatment that provides nerve stimulation to the nerves of the bladder and rectum to help them function better. The procedure has been shown to decrease symptoms by over 50% for the majority of patients and lasts up to 7 years. The procedure involves placing small wire into your lower back next to the nerves that control your bladder. A small electrical stimulus then is provided and can be controlled by you to achieve a setting that works well. Those stimuli help down regulate overactive nerve signals as well as help increase bladder emptying in patients with a bladder that doesn't empty well. To see if the procedure works for you, a simple in-office test can be performed under a local anesthetic.
